One look at The Wave, a small section of the Coyote Buttes North Special Management Area in the Paria Canyon/Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness, and you might think you’re on another planet.

The hardest part about hiking the Wave is getting the permit. Each day, thousands of people will apply for just 64 daily permits, 48 of which are given out by advance on-line lottery, 16 through a daily in-person lottery.

That would be the ultimate case of not seeing the forest for the trees, right? Getting a permit to hike The Wave is a highly-coveted, once-in-a-lifetime experience. So how do you ensure that you make the most of it? By hiring a guide!

Having hiked the Wave multiple times in all weather conditions, there are a number of things that I have learned to check off before I make the drive to the trailhead. Here is my routine after getting the permit.

Jan 19, 2019 · You crossed your fingers, toes, and a few other extremities in order to secure your permit to hike The Wave. The government couldn’t have chosen a worse time to go on shutdown mode! Fortunately, that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your long-awaited and highly-coveted trip to The Wave.

Where is the wave The Wave is located in the Coyote Buttes North Special Management Area, which is located within the Paria Canyon/Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. This land of geological and scenic wonders is overseen by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and straddles the border of Northern Arizona and Southern Utah.

For hiking to the Wave on May 10th, you would have needed to apply for the online permit lottery in January. Your only other option at this point is to take part in the in-person permit lottery, which is held the day before you wish to hike.

Fortunately there are plenty of sites you can visit free of charge, or close to, in the Page, AZ and Kanab, UT area. Some of these are: Horseshoe Bend – $10/vehicle, open sunrise to sunset (best to go at sunrise for cooler temperatures and thinner crowds)
