Mar 14, 2020 · The snowy egret is already a lovely bird, with the white feathers offset by black legs and bill, with bright yellow feet and lore. But during breeding season, they really turn it on with the long whispy feathers on the back, neck, and head, and the lore and feet take on a deep orange to red color

May 12, 2018 · Snowy is only marginally smaller than Little. This bird has obvious long paired plumes so I think it has to be a Little Egret - possibly the photo angle contributes to an impression of unusually small size?

Jun 11, 2012 · I stood there for a 1/2 hour watching about 10 Snowy Egrets in a continual parade along the lake fishing this way. The first photograph shows the Snowy flying low to the water. The sencond shows it dipping its bill in the water, and the third shows it flying away with a tiny fish.

Oct 2, 2024 · Snowy and Little are the same size. Both have dark legs and yellow feet. (Snowy perhaps brighter) both can be hard to see when covered in mud. Great White Egret is much larger, but has a yellow bill and dark feet. You would really need to see a shaggy nape, not with 2 plumes like Little, and extremely bright yellow facial markings.

Oct 1, 2005 · Hi Al, While Little Egrets do not normally occur as far north as Morecambe Bay when it comes to breeding or regular wintering, they are regularly seen in small numbers north of the current breeding range: it must be remembered that, until as recently as the mid 1990s, the species bred no closer than N.France, and the range expansion is still continuing.

Jul 16, 2008 · Just thought this guy was a little unusual with the dark plumes. However, looking at another dozen or so in the area, they also had dark plumes to some extent. Hadn't ever noticed this before. Photos taken last week. Anyone got a good explanation? Thanks,
