According to Puget, the failures traced back to the 3B2QGXA7 firmware and primarily affect 2TB versions of the 980 Pro (although lower capacities are not entirely immune).

So I downloaded Samsung Magician to check my current 980, but Magician can't find it. Magician can find my sata Samsung SSD 870 EVO 250GB.

Nov 22, 2022 · Thank you for your reply. You raise a valid point, it's not exactly necessary vs a regular SSD. But I can get the Samsung 980 Pro 2TB for a good price currently. The price difference with a 2TB SATA SSD is negligible. I understand PCIe is backwards compatible, but this is a PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD that goes in a PCIe 4.0 slot.

The back-2-back 980 Pro and 990 Pro issues, especially with the 2TB variant made some bad news, because the 990 Pro 2TB was released at >300€ and caused many years of WEAR in a few days of normal / desktop ussage and Samsung declined RMAs for them.

I had to run the Samsung software from inside unRAID because the bootable disc that Samsung makes available uses a Linux kernel so old it doesn't support the USB controller of my AMD based server.

Feb 16, 2022 · My drive has a manufacture date of 11/24/2021 (980 Pro 2TB with heatsink), it had firmware version 3B2QGXA7 on it, this is two versions older than the current newest firmware 5B2QGXA7 According to the PS5 test for SSD, the drive speed went from 5300mb/s before the update to 6500mb/s after the update.

Sep 3, 2021 · The Samsung 980 Pro was released 1 year ago (it uses NVMe 1.3c) with a 1200 TBW for the 2TB model, the Firecuda 530 just came out (it uses NVME 1.4) with a 5400 TBW for the 4TB model and a 2550 TBW for the 2TB model. The price for the Segate Firecuda 530 is a little more expensive than the Samsung 980 PRO.
