Napoleon’s body was moved from St Helena to Paris in 1840. When Queen Victoria visited his nephew, Napoleon III, in 1855, she made a trip to view the tomb. She recorded in her Journal: ‘there I stood on the arm of Napoleon IIIrd, before the coffin of his Uncle, our bitterest foe!

He was able to view, and draw, Napoleon’s body shortly after the Emperor’s death on 5 May 1821. Despite French requests for the return of his body to France, Napoleon was buried on St Helena. His remains were transferred to Paris in 1840.

Jun 12, 2024 · Napoleon’s tomb is open every day from 10am to 6pm. On the first Friday of the month, they do a “soirée nocturne” where the tomb is open from 6pm to 10pm. The noctural night will give you access to all of the collections at Les Invalides, not just the tomb.
