Dec 30, 2023 · Locomotive Descriptions and Phases - EMD/GMD GP28, GP35. The EMD GP35 was introduced in 1963 as a successor to the GP30. With the 16-cylinder turbocharged 567 engine uprated from 2,250 to 2,500 horsepower, EMD caught up to the power output of the competing ALCO C-424 and GE U25B.

The EMD GP35 was originally used and meant to be a main-line freight diesel locomotive, and was also more affordable and convienient compared to GE's early Universal Series locomotives. It was the answer to the replacement of the aging EMD F Series locomotives, which were beginning to show their age.

The EMD GP35 were 2500 Horsepowered units powered by the last version of the EMD 567 class diesel engine. These engines were considered part of the second generation of diesel-electric locomotives. These units were purchased in two groups. The first in July 1965 and the second in September 1966.
