English medieval pottery was produced in Britain from the sixth to the late fifteenth centuries AD. During the sixth to the eighth centuries, pottery was handmade locally and fired in a bonfire. Common pottery fabrics consisted of clay tempered with sand or shell, or a mix of sand and shell.

Though only the upper part of this large 13th-century jug remains, it’s still possible to identify this important piece of Scarborough ware. This green-glazed jug is decorated with knights riding on horses. Can you see one of their striking triangular shields?

Jugs with applied slip and moulded decoration were characteristic of the pottery making centres in Normandy in the 13th century. Many of their products have been found in excavations in England, especially in and around port cities such as Southampton.

This pottery jug is an example of medieval London-type ware. The common name of baluster jugs originates from the very tall and elongated shape of the jug, with its curves running from the oval body towards gently expanding base and the tulip-shaped neck.
