The Gloucester Cathedral organ was originally constructed in 1666 by Thomas Harris and represents the only complete 17th Century cathedral organ case in this country. It has been associated with many illustrious musicians over the centuries, including the likes of Sir Herbert Brewer, Herbert Howells and John Stafford Smith.

Unfortunately, Gloucester’s famous organ is currently out of commission. A contract has been signed with organ specialists Nicholson & Co. Ltd to refurbish and renew the instrument in time for the 2026 Three Choirs Festival.

The organ that Thomas Harris built for Gloucester Cathedral in 1666 has been rebuilt over and over again, each time reflecting different musical emphases. Sometimes these have reflected the changing musical needs of the cathedral, and sometimes wider trends in organ design.

The cathedral's first organ was built by Thomas Harris in 1666. Its original case remains complete, the only such surviving example from the 17th century in England. The pipes displayed on the front of the case are still functional.
