The 16th Infantry was the featured unit in the motion picture The Big Red One. The 16th is also the regiment Fox Company of the game Call of Duty 2: Big Red One. The 1st Battle Group, 16th Infantry, was the unit filmed in the beach landing scenes in the 1961 movie The Longest Day.

The 1st Infantry Division Band (abbreviated as the 1ID Band and often known as the Big Red One Band) is the musical ambassador for the division that performs for military ceremonies at Fort Riley and the surrounding communities in the Midwest.

The regiment’s first major attack was made during the bloody three-day drive near Soissons in July 1918. Along with the rest of the Big Red One, it relentlessly attacked until the German rail line that supplied their front line troops was severed forcing a major withdrawal of the enemy’s forces.

On D-Day, June 6,1944, the Big Red One stormed ashore at Omaha Beach. Soon after H-Hour, the Division's 16th Infantry Regiment was fighting for its life on a strip of beach near Coleville-sur-Mer that had been marked the "Easy Red" on battle maps.

In June 1955, the 16th Infantry Regiment became the first Big Red One unit to return to the United States via GYROSCOPE when it was replaced by the 86th Infantry, 10th Infantry Division at Conn Barracks.

On the morning of 24 February 1991, under Maj. Gen. Thomas G. Rhame, the Big Red One spearheaded the armored attack into Iraq, by creating the all-important breach in Iraqi defenses that enabled VII Corps units to smash into Iraq.

On 15 January 1945, the Big Red One launched its part of the Allied counteroffensive to reduce the Bulge. Over the next seven weeks, the regiment conducted numerous attacks in western Germany culminating in the capture of Bonn on 8 March 1945.

Constituted on 3 May 1861, the 16th Infantry Regiment distinguished itself in the Civil War, Indian Wars, War with Spain, Philippine Insurrections, and World War I. Before Operation Overlord, the regiment had already served in the Big Red One's amphibious assaults during Operations Torch (1942) and Husky, 1943.
