Hobart Hurricanes' Mitchell Owen is set for the global stage after a "life-changing" BBL final, say cricketing commentators.

The 23-year-old Mitchell Owen had announced himself earlier in the competition with a thrilling 64-ball century against Perth Scorchers in a low-scoring encounter. But against a Thunder side led by Warner, one of the T20 greats, and featuring two players of Indian descent – the unrelated Jason and Tanveer Sangha – few expected him to be the hero.

A record-equalling century by Mitchell Owen and a three-wicket haul by skipper Nathan Ellis helped Hobart Hurricanes secure their maiden Big Bash League (BBL) title, beating Sydney Thunder in the final at Hobart by seven wickets.

Owen and Caleb Jewell blasted a record 74 from the four-over powerplay, smashing the previous best of 64 from BBL11. The contest appeared over before the Thunder had the chance to blink, with Owen rocketing to 31 from 10, 47 from 14, and 68 from 23 at difference stages of the first five overs of the innings.

Mitch Owen described winning the Hobart Hurricanes' first Big Bash League title as a "childhood dream" following their win over the Sydney Thunder in the final.

Mitch Owen eventually got out after scoring 108 runs off 42 balls but he had ensured that Hurricanes would be lifting their maiden title.
