MetService has a red warning in place for the thunderstorms - which it says will move toward the area around Te Aroha and Paeroa at 7pm and be accompanied by torrential rain and hail.

Metereologist John Law says heavy showers could change into a storm quickly. He says the thunderstorms will be slow moving which brings a risk of localised heavy rain.
