Gov. Kathy Hochul is pointing out possible benefits of congestion pricing to suburban commuters, an influential voting bloc that could decide her political fortunes.

Opponents haven't identified a quick way to end congestion pricing. Supporters and transportation experts are confident the new Manhattan tolls are here to stay.

It’s been one of the most controversial stories in New York City: A toll for nearly every driver who goes to midtown or downtown Manhattan during peak hours. New York is the first North American city to have congestion pricing.

With the first week of New York’s Congestion Pricing toll in the books, commuters are reaping a reward, spending less time in traffic in exchange for their $9 toll to enter lower Manhattan, said the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

A New York federal court denied Rockland County’s effort to stay congestion pricing in New York City while its appeal proceeds in the Second Circuit, finding the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority stands to lose about $12 million monthly in unrecoverable operations and maintenance costs if the program were enjoined even temporarily.

The MTA said 7.5% fewer vehicles entered the zone below 60th Street during the first week in which drivers had to pay the congestion pricing toll.
