Playing in MLB is extremely difficult. Staying in the league is even harder, especially for a highly volatile position such as a relief pitcher. We are already used to seeing talented bullpen pieces flame out because of injury or other reasons.

Reliever Paul Sewald and the Cleveland Guardians agreed Wednesday to a $7 million, one-year contract, adding a setup arm for closer Emmanuel Clase.

All teams will have Spring Training games with the “robo ump” system in place - the Guardians seeing 27 games. For those who are unfamiliar with the system, all teams start with two ABS challenges that allows the batter or the pitcher to challenge the umpire’s call on balls and strikes.

As the MLB offseason continues, the Guardians have made a move to bolster their bullpen, signing free agent veteran reliever Paul Sewald.

One of Cleveland’s biggest strengths is its bullpen. They have star closer Emmanuel Clase, who had a 0.61 ERA last season and led the league in games finished (66) and saves (47). They also have Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis, and lefty Tim Herrin, all of whom had sub-2.00 ERAs last season.

The Cleveland Guardians make a lot of questionable trades, but it's hard to argue with how consistently good the team is.
