Pakistan and India have agreed to extend the visa-free Kartarpur religious corridor for five years, marking a rare act of cooperation between the South Asian neighbors, Islamabad announced on Monday.

Days after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's visit to Pakistan for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation or SCO meeting, India and Pakistan on Tuesday agreed to renew the agreement on the Kartarpur corridor for another five years.

The Government of Pakistan has announced the renewal of Kartarpur Corridor agreement for an additional period of five years. According to a Foreign Office statement, the agreement between India and Pakistan is aimed to facilitate the pilgrims to visit Gurudwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur at Narowal in Pakistan.

India and Pakistan have renewed the agreement on Sri Kartarpur Sahib Corridor for the next five years, the Ministry of External Affairs announced on Tuesday.

The first agreement was signed back in October 2019 for five years to facilitate the visit of Sikh pilgrims from India to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur through the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor.

Kartarpur Sahib is located in Pakistan’s Narowal district across the Ravi River, about four kilometres from the Dera Baba Nanak shrine.
