The FIA announced on Wednesday that Johnny Herbert, a former driver who notched three Grand Prix victories during his time on the grid, was being dropped as a race steward. Herbert first became a race official for the 2010 season, when the FIA first added former drivers to the list of stewards.

Since becoming a FIA steward, there has been a lot of controversy surrounding Johnny Herbert. Decisions that have been made by the former F1 driver have come under criticism, but the reason for his departure from the governing body is because of his interviews conducted with betting companies.

At the end of last season, F1 drivers called on the FIA to try to ensure there was greater consistency in stewarding decisions and the awarding of penalties, with Mercedes driver George Russell being particularly vocal on the need for permanent stewards instead of the existing rotating, volunteer system.

Formula One season onwards, Johnny Herbert will no longer be an FIA steward during Grand Prix weekends. The decision puts an end to the increasingly loud calls for the removal of Herbert from his voluntary position because of possible conflicts of interest.

Formula One's governing body dropped former racer Johnny Herbert as a grand prix steward on Wednesday, saying the Briton's work as a media pundit was incompatible with the role.

Johnny Herbert says he understands why he was axed by the FIA and he will no longer allowed to steward races from this season. "I'm very grateful for the opportunity of being an FIA driver steward and I have thoroughly enjoyed the role I have been involved in over the years," he said.
