This mightn’t be the prettiest castle, but the history behind it is fascinating and well worth a visit. Do the tour - it’s not crazy expensive, and you get to see so many hidden areas. Tours through…Full review by lizztallantjones

The tour is not free. Eight pounds seems about right from what I can remember but there are concessions for the young and old. The tour is good value for money and is very interesting. You can access some of the exterior grounds and the cafe without an entrance fee. Lancaster Priory is next door, is well worth a visit and is free to enter.
Do you have to do a tour? If not is there a entrance fee.

Yes you can enter the castle for free but to see the prison and courts you have to do the guided tour for which when I was there there was a charge of £8

A:
Hi Shirley, when I went part of the tour was inside, you got to see the court rooms, but not sure if they usually show you more.
