I'm an artist and I hate tours. But, with art in general: you get out of it what you bring to it. And if you're not familiar with the artist(s) then a tour may be helpful. All the suggestions above seem like useful information about how and when to participate in a tour. And keep in mind what Akira Kurosawa said: "An artist is the one who does not avert his (her) eyes."
