We had a great experience riding through the area. The guides were very nice and informative. The horses were very chill and in good shape. The view from the ridge of the ocean was spectacular. Stop…Full review by Doug K

Rambling ride across pretty terrain with guide Tricia and a horse named Acoley. Relaxed pace. Fun to see boars and egrets. If driving from the East, their sign is on L. side of road and sits back a w…Full review by biggreenmargaret
Hi, we are splitting our August trip between two locations with accommodations in Volcano and Mauna Lani area. My question is, as far as driving, which location will offer a shorter drive or better drive as far as distance and traffic? How long are the drives? Since this is August is the morning tour more recommended? And does your horseback tour go to the black sand beach or to a an area to view the beach? And are guests on horseback the entire time or is there an opportunity to walk around as well? Sorry for all the questions! Thank you for your reply.

Agree with the other responses: Mauna Lani would be closer than Volcano. I also did the afternoon ride and can't speak to whether morning would be better. We were there in September. No, we didn't go to the black sand beach or spend any time walking around. I'm not sure if seeing the valley a different way (mule-drawn wagon, ATV, etc.) would give you a better experience. You will have to compare the tour websites and reviews and make your own decision. However you decide to go, the valley is quite beautiful. Make sure you get a picture of the view from the top, even if you have to go back for it yourself. The view is iconic.
I am going to the Big Island in August, would it better to book the 9:30am tour or the 1:30pm tour?

We did the 9:30 tour and finished around 12:30. It was a hot day, so I'm glad we did the earlier ride. Afterwardd we had lunch in the town, and then went towards Hilo, hiking at different parks w/ waterfalls. If you're staying on the Kona side, it's over an hour drive home, and it gets dark early (by 7), so I would personally recommend going in the morning.
I see pictures where riders go through water. Do we need waterproof shoes? Or, would sneakers suffice?

You don't need waterproof shoes but it can be muddy or the ground can be damp so a washable pair of sneakers are fine. Water in the streams can be up or down so it will be an …
