The range stretches from the eastern edge of the Czech Republic and Austria in the northwest through Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, Romania to Serbia in the south. The highest range within the Carpathians is the Tatra Mountains: the highest peaks in Slovakia exceed 2,600 m. The second-highest range is the Southern Carpathians in Romania, where the highest peaks range between 2,500 m and 2,550 m.
